“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” – Jude 1:3
THE WORD “CONTEND”, as conveyed in the above verse, is derived from the Greek verb epagonizomai, defined “to contend about a thing, as a combatant”. I conceive there is no heartier exhortation in the sacred canon than this vehement call to action. Christians are not to idly observe as the world blasphemes God, spurns His Word, and plunges deeper into the darkness of sin and sorrow. Neither have they license to shame over the Gospel of Christ, though its proclamation incurs derision and hostility from the wicked. No sir, the redeemed are to wholly immerse themselves in the warfare waged daily upon spiritual battlefields, holding fast the profession of their faith without wavering, enduring hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. For there are things to be contended for – great things, important things, marvelous things – and it is every believer’s business to see these are fervently, tirelessly, ceaselessly defended.
But the Christians willing to earnestly contend for this faith, it is to be lamented, are remarkably few. The children of God do not hesitate to broadcast their affinity for men, for movements, for geographical regions. But to announce one’s faith in Jesus Christ, and, even more so, to denounce the divers doctrines and religions which attempt to turn men away from the Prince of peace, is impermissible for those who love the praise of men more than the praise of God. Where are the seven thousand men who have not bowed their knee to the image of Baal? Where are the Thessalonians who turned from idols to serve the living and true God? Where are the Bereans who receive the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so? Their ranks have been thinned to the point of extinction, for no period of church history has seen apostasy so reign unchallenged, has seen compromise so trump convictions, has seen man’s words so supersede God’s words, as this period.
As a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit, the lukewarm church of modernity – with its multiplicity of “Bible” versions, ecumenical heresies, and repulsion to truth – is entirely powerless to counteract sin and evil. On the contrary, it has abetted their increase, either by an ignominious apathy which refuses to combat false “Bibles”, false doctrines, and false teachers, or odious compromise which promotes them outright. In contemplating the woeful condition of the church, I am apt to consider my Savior’s prophecy that “many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”
You inquire why I have created this website? Because I have grown weary of the rank heresy, confusion, and imbecilic indifference which personifies much of the church; of the promulgation of heinous perversions of the sacred Scriptures through new “Bible translations”; of doctrines of devils – like Lordship salvation – which substitute damnable fictions for the truth of the Gospel. In a word, I so despise the sundry and sordid falsehoods supplanting the Holy Writ that I aim now, by God’s grace, to combat them with writings concerning three principal subjects:
- The explication of biblical doctrine (Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth https://www.thelordisgracious.com/articles/rightly-dividing-the-word-of-truth/)
- The refutation of false doctrine (Damnable Heresies https://www.thelordisgracious.com/damnable-heresies/)
- Defense of the King James Bible and its manuscripts (Forever Settled in Heaven https://www.thelordisgracious.com/forever-settled-in-heaven/)
I would be remiss not to emphasize that I do not compose these articles on behalf of “religion”, for religion is entirely incompatible with the Bible. Religion exalts man and commands him to earn salvation; Christianity exalts Jesus Christ and teaches that eternal life comes simply by believing the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). This may be called a “Christian website”, or a “Bible website”, but it is in no wise a “religious website”. Moreover, do bear in mind, whatever truths my articles may contain, it is the Word of God – the King James Bible – which must be the final authority, and by it alone must everything else be measured. I therefore request that you try my writings, not by the words of men, but by the living Words of the living God. For “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
